Cannock 10

  • Cannock Chase, WS15 2US (map)

How far is it?

The Cannock 10 is 10 miles! It is 1 lap of the course we’ll be using the for the Cannock 50 on the same day. You can experience the Switchbacks, the hills and terrain…once!

Course description

It’s pretty spectacular, and hilly! The route starts at the rifle range cadet hut and goes on a tour of fire roads and tighter single track routes around Cannock Chase. With no road crossings you can just put your head down and enjoy the amazing hills.

This is a very tough route, the lap has over 1500ft of elevation, there are steep up and down hill sections on very loose stones. It is rewarding however, the views spectacular and the escapism very real!

The route is intended to be as per the video and the map. However this will be confirmed, in association with Forestry England, closer to the event. The forest is a living breathing habitat and as such things change, species need to be protected and pathways rerouted.

I’ve heard you do recces of the route?

That’s right! We’ll plan a recce for early spring 2023. It’s with support from a great local group, the Cannock Chase Trail Runners. Between Big Bear and CCTR we’ll take 1 or 2 groups around the route for a socially paced recce. The idea is for it to help you get familiarised with the route, meet some others doing it and ask any questions you might have. Do not plan for it to be your tempo session as the speed will be determined by the group as a whole. It’s a challenging route so may catch a few by surprise!

The recce is aimed at the Cannock 50 entrants as we’ll complete the whole lap, but Cannock 10 runners are welcome to join of course!

Where is it?

Cannock Chase is in Staffordshire (WS15 2US). It is managed by Forestry England.

Parking will be at the Tackeroo site (here in What 3 words) and free.

The nearest train stations Rugeley Trent Valley and Rugeley Town are both approximately 2 miles away

Mandatory kit?

The mandatory kit will be as below. It might seem excessive to have mandatory kit for a 10 mile event for some people but with an event in remote locations with poor access this stuff might be vital to you not having a lengthy hospital stay if you are seriously injured. Spot checks will be completed and an hour time penalty given for any pieces missing.

The final pre-event email will be in the week before the event when the waterproof jacket may be removed from the mandatory list depending on the forecast.

  • Bladder/bottles capable of carrying 500ml of water

  • Waterproof jacket

  • Fully charged mobile phone with; the RD’s phone number (07378 144671 - for emergencies only) and What Three Words downloaded (ask if you aren't sure)

  • Survival blanket (1.4m minimum)

  • Whistle

  • A cup to drink from – the event is cupless

Are there cut offs?

Sort of….

You’ve got until the Cannock 50 is over at 20:30 - so that’s nearly 12 hours!!

Permission and Licences

Permission for this event has been obtained from Forestry England. This event will be licensed and permitted by the Trail Running Association, permit number pending.

I’ve heard you do cupless events?

That’s right! Read all about how we do cupless events here

Has the event been run before?

Sort of, but no! The Cannock 50 in 2022 used the same course and set up and was a roaring success. Adding the 10 mile option is new for 2023 but we’re sure it’ll be great fun!

Can I walk it?

Of course. If you can run it all you’re a better runner than any of us here! It’s very punchy in places.

I’m not that fussed by a medal, drink and flapjack…

In that case our partnership with Trees Not Tees may be of interest! When you sign up to this event you can select to have no finish line swag and instead we’ll donate the cost of this to Trees Not Tees who will plant a tree in their Scottish woodland on your behalf! You can find more info about this initiative here.

The Cannock 10 is a new event for 2023 and it promises to be an awesome event! Cannock Chase is one of the most impressive forests in the country with expansive views and some excellent terrain to run over. We cannot wait to bring people on to the trails around Cannock Chase.
